BOULDER a FALLO

Discover Fallo Bloc, a pearl of bouldering in Abruzzo

A few kilometers from Pennadomo, in the woods above the village of Fallo, there is one of the most interesting bouldering areas in the province of Chieti.

Known among climbers as Block Failure, this area offers a quiet and wild natural environment, with numerous boulders distributed between the forest and the banks of the Sangro river.

In 2025 the area already had more than thirty main blocks, distributed in different sectors with very different characteristics. All the boulders are easily accessible from the town with short approaches, generally less than 10 minute walk.

The rock:

The rock of the blocks is compact calcarenite, a grainy limestone rock with a relatively smooth surface but with excellent grip, even on the sunniest days.

The morphology of the boulders changes depending on the sector.

In the industry River the blocks have more rounded and globular shapes with:

•natural cracks

•flared edges

•tacche

In the sectors Woodstone, The Golden and Fallosport instead the shapes of the rock are clearer and more defined.

In the industry Fallosport blocks are found characterized by marked edges and pronounced edges, often aerial and of large dimensions.

Climbing style

The bouldering in Fallo is varied and quite technical. Many problems require precision in the feet and good body control, with positional movements on slopes and notches that are not always readable on the first try.

The lines alternate compressions, heels and delicate passages where balance often counts more than strength. It is a climb that requires attention and sensitivity in the movements, with sequences that become more logical as the problem is worked.

Seasons and conditions

Thanks to the different exposure of the sectors, the area can be visited at different times of the year.

The sectors Woodstone, The Golden and Fallosport are generally better suited to winter season.

The sector River, however, it remains cooler and shaded thanks to the proximity of the water and allows you to climb well even during the hottest periods, especially early in the morning or in the evening.

During the summer it is also possible to swim in the Sangro river, in the natural pools that are located a few tens of meters from the blocks.

History of the area

The Fallo bouldering area was discovered in 2021 and Giorgio Ferretti, which began to valorise the first large boulder in the Fiume sector, today known as Masso Ferretti, together with the neighbor Sasso GF.

Subsequently the area was expanded and cleaned thanks to the work of several local climbers, including:

•Federico Di Cosmo

•Mirko De Girolamo

•Luca "Bubu" Frattura

•Simone Margiotta

•Antonello D’Angelo

Respect the bouldering area

As in all natural areas, it is important to climb while respecting the environment.

When climbing in Fallo it is good practice:

•use appropriate crashpads

•brush the sockets after attempts

•do not leave waste in the woods

•respect the paths and vegetation

This helps keep the area clean and scalable over time.

In the 2024 New sectors have been identified which are still in the development phase.
